As a Licensed Professional Counselor & Board Certified Art Therapist, I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship to facilitate self-awareness, growth, and change. Engaging in therapy requires courage. Taking ownership and accountability over your life is the prerequisite to meaningful change. My approach is strength-based, client-centered, mind-body focused, and holistically grounded. As an art therapist, clients have the option to engage in art therapy (but not required). No art experience is required. The creative process and artwork are explored to uncover insight into thoughts & feelings. I work with pre-teens, teens, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, disordered eating and eating disorders, body image, grief and loss, veterans and their families, those searching to find fluidity within life transitions, or guidance for personal growth and empowerment. I believe the ultimate goal of therapy is to reconnect, reactivate, and lead from an internal well of personal power, an internal compass. The therapist is a nonjudgemental, compassionate guide in this process, but it is the client who ultimately uncovers insight and discovers how to live a life empowered from within.

I've never been to therapy what can I expect?

I work with my clients to develop treatment goals; the reason(s) you're looking to engage in therapy. We create a framework, a frequency, and cadence that works for you. This is fluid and changes as healing is not linear and you are not a robot.

I am strength based. I am interested in you as a human being first, and then what is clouding you from achieving the life you hope to lead.

All my treatment is trauma-informed, bridging somatic, body-based techniques, mindfulness components of dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques.

Do I have to do art therapy?

No.

It is inaccurate to state that one modality of therapy fits all, that's simply untrue. This is why I am also a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and regularly seek a variety of continuing education to expand and grow.

I'm not an artist
can I do art therapy?

Human beings are creative by design. Even you.  With that said, art therapy is not about being "a good artist", whatever that even means. Art therapy is not art class. You are not being graded. No one will ever see what you create in art therapy, unless you choose to share it. While the product is used for discussion, art therapy is essentially process based. Art materials give the creator a powerful new language. The body engages and moves creating lines, symbols, textures, and structures building an avenue to articulate the indescribable. Art gives the creator the power to build, to protect, to destroy. Art moves freely into places words cannot. Expressive therapies can enter into the places within the body and brain where trauma is stored. I incorporate a wide variety of materials (drawing, acrylic paint, watercolor paint, illustration markers, paint markers, pencils, pens, inks, charcoal, clay, modeling clay, natural objects, found objects, collage, magazines, textiles, fabrics, etc. ) to help you build the alphabet to your new language. I use both a directive and non directive approach which is tailored to the client's needs.

Do You Accept Insurance?

Yes. I currently accept Cigna, Evernorth, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Connecticut medicaid (HUSKY). For out of network insurance (plans that are not listed above), I can provide you with a superbill, a receipt of services provided, which you may submit to your insurance company for possible full or partial reimbursement based on your coverage.
